Countertop Materials We Install and What Each One Is Good For

Engineered quartz. Roughly 93% aggregate to 7% polyester resin, making it essentially non-porous. It is more scratch resistant and less porous than natural quartz, never needs sealing, and is the most stain-resistant surface we sell after granite. Available in 6mm, 1.2cm, 2cm, 3cm and 4cm. This is the low-maintenance default for a family kitchen.

Granite. Natural stone with genuinely unique variegation, cut to size and machined at the edges with routers, grinders and CNC equipment. It wants an impregnating sealer, though modern oleophobic impregnators stretch resealing to roughly once every five to ten years.

Quartzite. Natural stone with marble's look and far better resistance to etching. Premium material, premium price.

Marble. Beautiful, soft, and it will develop a patina. We install it for clients who want that and understand it.

Solid surface. About 12mm thick, prefabricated at the shop and assembled on site, with glued joints sanded to seams you cannot feel. Sinks can be integrated invisibly. Lower impact resistance than stone, and it moves slightly with temperature.

Butcher block. Renewable and warm. Research indicates wooden work surfaces are no more hazardous than plastic alternatives and in some cases safer. It needs oiling and thorough cleaning after raw meat contact.

High-pressure laminate. Kraft paper and decorative papers bonded with melamine resins under heat and pressure, with the laminate layer typically .030 to .040 inch. It remains the most economical countertop on the market, and postformed edges plus field scribe cuts make it fast to install.

Concrete, stainless steel, glass and tile are all available for the right project. Concrete can take an integral sink or drainboard. Stainless can have a sink welded in and ground flush.

An average Carlsbad kitchen runs 40 to 60 square feet of countertop. That puts a quartz replacement at roughly $3,000 to $9,000 installed and a quartzite or marble job at $4,000 to $15,000 and up. Add-ons that move the number: waterfall island ends, full-height slab backsplash, mitered thick edges, undermount versus drop-in sink cutouts, cooktop cutouts, and demolition and disposal of the old tops.

These are typical San Diego County market ranges, not our price. Your kitchen countertop replacement number depends on what we measure on site, and it arrives as a free, itemized written estimate.

Standard Dimensions and Details

US countertop depth is typically 25 to 26 inches, finished height 35 to 36 inches from the floor, with a slight front overhang for reach and kick space. Slab thicknesses run 2cm and 3cm most commonly, with 6mm and 1.2cm used for cladding and vertical applications and 4cm for heavy custom work. A 2cm top can be built up at the edge to look like 4cm at lower material cost.

Edge profiles. Eased, bevel, bullnose, half bullnose, ogee, mitered and waterfall. Edges are machined with routers, grinders and CNC equipment, and the profile you pick changes both price and how the counter feels under your forearm.

Seams. Natural stone runs over about 10 feet almost always need a seam. Where it lands is a design decision, and we place it deliberately, usually at a sink or a cooktop rather than in the middle of an open run. Solid surface glues into a joint sanded to near invisibility.

06

Sink Cutouts: Undermount, Drop-In or Integrated

Undermount. The stone edge is finished at the fabrication shop and the sink mounts from below with silicone-based sealants. Cleanest look, easiest to wipe crumbs into, and it costs more.

Self-rimming or drop-in. The sink sits in a templated hole and is suspended by its rim with sealant beneath. Least expensive, and the standard choice on laminate.

Integrated. Solid surface sinks are glued to the underside and the joint is sanded until it disappears. Stainless sinks can be welded into a stainless top and ground flush.

We handle the cutout, the mounting, and the plumbing reconnection, and we do not leave you to arrange a separate plumber for the last two hours of the job.

Our Countertop Replacement Process

1. Free quote. Square footage, material, edge profile, sink type. 2. Slab selection. For natural stone, you tag your specific slabs at the yard. For quartz, you pick from full samples. 3. Digital template. Only after cabinets are level and secure. Templating over unlevel boxes produces bad seams and lippage. 4. Fabrication. Cutting, edge profiling, cutouts and polishing, typically 7 to 14 days. 5. Demolition of the existing tops. Half a day, dust contained. 6. Install. Set, level, seam, sink mount, plumbing reconnect. 7. Sealing where required, plus final cleanup and care instructions.

Total elapsed time is typically 2 to 3 weeks, with one day without a working sink.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do new countertops cost in Carlsbad?

Installed, laminate runs $25 to $50 per square foot, quartz $75 to $150, granite $80 to $175, and marble or quartzite $100 to $250 and up. An average Carlsbad kitchen of 40 to 60 square feet typically costs $3,000 to $9,000 in quartz.

How long does countertop replacement take?

Two to three weeks from template to install, with fabrication taking 7 to 14 days. Demolition and installation are usually one day each, so you are without a sink for about 24 hours.

Which is better, quartz or granite?

Quartz is non-porous, never needs sealing, and is more consistent in pattern. Granite is natural, genuinely unique slab to slab, and wants an impregnating sealer roughly every five to ten years. For a busy family kitchen, quartz is the lower-maintenance answer.

Do I need to replace my cabinets to replace the countertops?

No, as long as the boxes are structurally sound and level. If they are racked or swollen, new stone will telegraph the problem, so we assess the cabinets during the quote.

Can you keep my existing sink?

Usually yes with a drop-in sink. Undermount sinks are often damaged during removal, and a new cutout may not match the old sink's profile, so we will advise honestly during templating.

Where will the seams be?

Runs over about 10 feet in natural stone need at least one seam. We place seams at a sink or a cooktop where the eye does not linger, and we show you the layout before fabrication.

Do you remove and dispose of the old countertops?

Yes. Demolition, haul-off and disposal are included in our quotes.

Is butcher block sanitary in a kitchen?

Research indicates wooden surfaces are no more hazardous than plastic alternatives and in some cases safer, because bacteria are absorbed into the wood and do not multiply. It still needs thorough cleaning after raw meat contact and periodic oiling.

Do you offer free estimates for countertop replacement?

Yes. Free measurement and a written quote anywhere in Carlsbad and the surrounding North County communities.

Are you licensed and insured for countertop replacement?

Yes. A current California contractor license, general liability insurance and workers compensation. Certificate available on request.
