The Rules That Decide a Small Bathroom

Small rooms have less room for error, and the plumbing code sets hard minimums before design starts. A toilet needs 15 inches from its centerline to any side wall or fixture and 24 inches of clear space in front of it. A shower needs at least 1,024 square inches of floor and room for a 30-inch circle inside it. Everything else is planning.

• Doors are the first thing we look at. A swinging door can eat a fifth of the floor. A pocket door or an outswing often frees enough space for a larger vanity.
• Glass beats curtains. A fixed glass panel instead of a curtain or a framed door lets the eye run to the back wall, which makes the room read larger.
• One tile, floor to wall. Fewer grout lines and one continuous color remove visual breaks.
• Storage goes into the walls. Niches and a recessed cabinet take nothing from the floor.

Space-Saving Moves We Use Most

Tub to Shower

In most 1970s and 1980s Carlsbad hall baths, the 60-inch tub is the biggest thing in the room. Converting it to a walk-in shower with a glass panel is the single change that makes the most difference.

Wall-Hung Toilets

The tank goes into a carrier inside a thickened wall, which saves roughly 9 to 12 inches of depth and leaves the floor clear to clean. It needs a wall with enough depth, which we confirm at the measurement.

Floating and Shallow Vanities

A wall-hung vanity shows the floor underneath it. Where a standard 21-inch-deep vanity crowds the door, an 18-inch-deep unit often fixes the problem.

Light

A single overhead can and a dim vanity bar make a small room feel smaller. We add a recessed light over the shower, a lit mirror or sconces at face height, and a ducted fan with humidity control, which California's green building rules require in a bathroom with a shower.

1. Free measurement. We check wall depths, the drain positions and the joists before we promise a layout. 2. Plan drawing. A scaled plan with clearances marked, so you can see that it fits. 3. Permit, demolition, rough-in. Pulled and inspected where plumbing or wiring changes. 4. Waterproofing, tile, finish. Membrane, flood test, tile, glass, vanity and trim.

Most small bathroom remodels take two to four weeks of construction.

Where Small Bathrooms Are Most Common

The older homes in Olde Carlsbad and the Barrio, the cottages near Carlsbad Village, and the beach houses in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Del Mar and Solana Beach have the tightest bathrooms we work in. Plenty of 1980s tract homes in Calavera Hills and La Costa have a cramped hall bath too.
